VELAMAS:
The Velamas are one of the ancient feudal communities in Andhra Pradesh controlling land and ruling large areas of andhra for several centuries. There are several ancient velama forts, castles and estates still extant in various parts of Andhra pradesh state, even neighbouring Tamilnadu. Among the famous principalities or "estates" ones are Devarakonda, Rajakonda, Pithapuram, Kollapur. (They are not interested in making hotels out of them, but interested visitors can take a look if the owners are in residence).
There are a few books like Velugodu kings history, accounts of Devarkonda, some details of Velama activity during kakatiya times, then during the Bahamani times. They clashed with the Reddis (regularly) and then had friendly dealings with the Orissa gajapatis and the Bahamanis, but fell afoul of the Vijayanagar empire and suffered a setback. But residual influence of velamas is noted in Karimnagar, Mahbubnagar, Pithapuram, etc.
While "roots" are conventionally traced to similar sounding Vellalas of Tamilnadu it is unlikely. More likely they might be traced to "lance wielders" (velam --lance) of some ancient army, even Pallavas and Satavahanas. The Pallavas are found as soldiers of the satavahanas initially and then in Guntur-Nellore area. Later they are found in north Tamilnadu area with Kanchipuram as capital. (a section of the land controlling Vellalas also are found later in North Tamilnadu there could be a link, as suggested by a reader, but we have no information. Please send if you have any concrete info about this connection. )
From the surnames there could be a connection to the medieval Gujarat-Rajasthan : needs detailed research.
According to a velamadora friend, among the Velamas today, there are two different physical types commonly seen--the fairer irani-- central asian looking type, and the darker tall well built and wiry type. (ed.--but this is basically amateur anthroplogy not to be taken very seriously : however there are some resemblances to the latter "type" in old paintings, so I've posted it here for people to evaluate)
Famous people
Singa Bhoopala of Rajkonda (nalgonda district) was a patron of art and literature and learned people adorned his court. Even the well known poet Srinatha, acclaimed all over south India of the 15th century, gulped when he was about to enter the gate of Rajakonda...this king was supposedly himself a scholar and not just a thug. There are many anecdotes of the Velama kings. They were said also to be a bit fanatic and extremist when it came to warfare.( but apparently that is exactly the required attitude according to a retired colonel I met.)
Legendary rivalry:
The Velamas were initially not enemies of the Reddis and both got along fine as feudatories of the Kakatiyas. Then in the jockeying for power, especially during the last phase of the Kakatiya kingdom, the professional rivalry went to extremes: the padmanayakas were favourites of the King. General Bobbareddy decided to show the King who exactly were the valourous and important fighters. He decided to wait till the Velama contigent got mauled, and then jump in to save the Velamas as well as the King. Unfortunately his timing was not good and both got beaten soundly. Since then the Velama Barons always saw red and blamed the Reddys for the kakatiya downfall. And whenever they got a chance it is said they took great pleasure in giving trouble to their neighbouring Reddy lords. After kakatiyas' downfall the velamas founded their independent states, the large one being Rajakonda and later Devarakonda (similarly Reddi kingdoms like Kondaveedu and Rajahmundry were founded). There are several famous Velama estates like Pithapuram and Jatprole ( kollapur).
Now the Reddis accuse the Velamas of sucking up to the Bahamanis to keep their state intact, and instead, indulge in attacking the Reddy kingdoms at every opportunity. The Velamas say if not for General Bobba reddy's extra-cleverness during the battle with delhi sultan army, kakatiyas would be intact at least till the British.
There is one more defence of the Velamas: Kaapaya Nayaka of Warangal, who successfully ejected the sultan's viceroy and was elected King, made a deal with the fledgling Bahmani state of Allaudin Hasan Gangu Bahmani. ( --it seems likely when Sultan Hasan was furnished with grand earth shattering titles for himself and names for his kingdom, he stubbornly insisted he was merely Hasan Gangu Bahmani, and his kingdom be named in memory of one Gangu brahman. He remembered his childhood, Gangu brahman's kindness looking after the orphan Hasan.)
Kapaya Nayaka of warangal made more deals with the Bahmani state at the expense of Velama controlled territory which was on the border. The Velamas were furious, so they made their OWN separate deal with the bahmanis, killed Kapaya nayaka and occupied Warangal as well. They constantly attacked the Reddy kingdoms, too. (These things happened long ago and are just legendary memories now, of course, but the rivalry is proverbial and is said to flare up every three -four hundred years). Finally the huge empires of Vijayanagar and the Orissa Gajapatis clashed, and the buffer states of independent Rajkonda and Devarkonda ceased to exist.
The Velamas had to join the imperial service of Vijayanagar as military contingents and regional governors --but posted far away from their old areas as a precaution. Many Velamas thus settled in Tamilnadu and elsewhere: their contingents included other communities also, and they proudly recalled the legends of their ancestral homes of Recherla, Rachakonda and Devarakonda. One reader suggested, the Tamil Vellalas include a Velama section. I have no information on this, but it sounds likely.
The Velamas are numerically small but well organised, for instance the AP Velama Association at Himayatnagar, Hyderabad. They even have a magazine called Velama Vyjayanti.
i am eager to know, how we got seperated from kammas, as all of we know that velamas and kammas are same and one, but how can we be proud about ram chandra rao. kvp who is supporting those idiots. why are we not supporting chandrababu.is kvp my representative, is his actions worth, huh nor kvp or kcr are worth. we already lost our kingdoms, why shoulsd we loss love of others can tell me teach. i am not giving a political view, but everyone of us know who is woorth and who uses us, lets not bring politics into this. lets think and support. sorry in flow i forgot i just wanted to know hw velama and kamma got seperated. sorry i typed everything out of out burst, sorry. who accept me or who hate my views can mail me to sush172@yahoo.com.

DeleteKamma,Raju and velama castes are one section of people until 11th century with caste name of durjaya. While Kammanadu Rajus became kammas Rajus living in other regions continued to use the same name "Raju" which later became modern day Raju caste. Velamas are people who got separated from this group known as Veli in Telugu means separate. People who became veli(separate) became velamas. They got separate because they turned into vaishnava matha very independence is more than in that of shaiva matha.whereas kammas and rajus continued in shaiva matha.this took place somewhere around late 11th century. DeletePurijaganath is from Visakhapatnam dist. He is also k velama
DeleteHi Sushmitha,
ReplyDeleteThere are two stories about velama and kamma relation. The first and popula story is, Goddess Lakshmi ear ring (kamma) was taken away by some Rakshasas and she prayed the lard and some worriers born and they went for that kamma and fought with Rakshas and one group brought that kamma they were called as kammas others didnot bring the kamma they were called as Velamas.
2) Badabanala Battu in 12th century divided kamma and velama gothrams and made separate lists for kammas and velamas.
3) The second story: During the Kakateeya Dynasty, before Rudrama devi become King of kakateeya, these 2 casts belongs to one tribe. Who opposed lady( Rudrama) to become a king formed as Velamas, who supported Rudrama formed as Kammas.
But this is not true story i believe, because if Velamas oppose Rani Rudrama Devi as king, why she appointed Recherla Prasaditya (a velama)
as Commander-in-chief for her Army!
you are wrong dude... velamas are born warriors... they never lose any combat.... it could be kammas the one who failed to bring the ear ring back
Deletehahaha funny☺

Dear Sush,
ReplyDeleteThe division of warrior clans of Telugu land into many castes commenced during the time of Kakatiya king Rudra I (1158-1195 CE). According to Velugotivari Vamsavali and Padmanayakacharitra, texts written in medieval times, farmers (Kapus) became Kammas and Velamas. In medieval times the term 'Kapu' meant a farmer or protector.
"...kaalachoditamuna kaakateevarugolchi kaapulella velama kammalairi"
(Telugu: ....కాలచోదితమున కాకతీవరుగొల్చి కాపులెల్ల వెలమ, కమ్మలైరి)
I hope u got your answer.

ReplyDeleteSome People think that Velama and Kamma people belongs to one Race but it is absolutely wrong. Velamas came from Orissa to Telangana and Unttarandra. The velama doras of Telangana migrated to Andhra 300 years back during Muslim Rule in Telangana Area and Andhra Area. Muslim Nawabs came to Coastal Andhra with Telangana Velama Sardars and Soldiers and occupied Raju and Kamma "Jagirs" with wicked plans. Later managed british with gifts and got Jamindars and occupied some more lands, extended their Jamindaris in Coastal Andhra and settled in Coastal Andhra. These Velamas also tried to come to Andhra Region during Chagi Anugu Raju Time. But Andhra People defeated their plans killed Brahma Naidu and Balachandrudu in Palanati War and sent Velamas back to Nalgonda District. These Velama people also caused to fall of Andhra Kingdom "Kakatiyas". These Velama doras and Reddys are besically Telangana castes, Kamma, Kapu, Koppu Velamas are Andhra castes.

DeleteAbout RAJUS ( the Telugu speaking Kshatriyas)
DeleteUnlike other Telugu community people, the Telugu Kshatriyas (Rajus) have Rishi Gothras and
Raja Pravaras also ( which indicate/describe their Royal lineage).
Rishi Pravara indicates to which Rishi ( Sage) disciples they have been.
Raja Pravara indicates to which Royal Race or lineage they belong.
At Rajus' ceremonies the Brahmins and Bhatrajus/Bhattus ( Bards / Minstrels ) recite their Rishi and Raja Pravaras.
Rajus have four Gothras ( Vashishta, Dhananjaya, Koundinya and Kashyapa). The ' Pashupati' Gothra which is seen among the Rayalaseema and Nellore Rajus could be synonym of Koundinya Gothra. . 'Surname' plays important role in Telugus' culture. Surname and Gothra both are equally important. Because some surnames are common in all the castes and in some cases Gothras are also common.
But usually Gothra and Surname combination of a caste person need not be the same of other caste person.
Rajus claim that they are descendants of Four Dynasties that ruled the Telugu land.
These 4 Dynasties are :
a) PARICHEDIS ( Guhila , Vishnukundin Clan )
b) KOTA/ DHARANI KOTA ( Kubja Vishnuvardhana , Eastern Chalukya Clan )
c) KAKATI/KAKATIYA ( Karikala Chola, Kakati Prola Raju Clan).
d) VARNATA ( Aditya chola, Varnata Rajendra Chola /Rajendra Choda Clan).
Information available on this topic in Telugu book " Andhra Samsthanamulu - Sahitya Poshana" published by Andhra University. This book was published form of Ph.D thesis submitted by Dr. Thoomati Donappa ( Former Vice Chancellor of Telugu University).

Amaravati was part of 'Dharanikota' kingdom. It was first ruled by Satavahanas and also was ruled by 'Kota Kings / Kota Chiefs' who were Rajus ( Telugu Kshatriyas ) of Dhanunjaya Gothra. According to Wikipedia the country on the southern bank of Krishna river was ruled by these Dhanunja gotra kings as a defecto independent power for over 150 years beginning of the 12th century to the last quarter of the 13th century .
Kota Chiefs had marital relations with Kakatiya kings.
Kota Hariseema Krishna was a Popular King among Kota Kings. Other kings were Bhima Raju, Keta Raju, Rudraraju, Dantuluri Gannabupaludu. Telugu poet Srinadhudu dedicated his literary work " Dhananjaya Vijayamu' to the King Dantuluri Gannabhupaludu. It was also seen that Telugu poet Mangalagiri Ananda Kavi dedicated his literary work " Vijayananda Vilasamu" to Datla Venkatrama Nrupudu ( Datla venkatrama Raju) of Kota lineage. Present Rajus / Dhananjaya Gotra Rajus of surnames Dantuluri ( Tuni Zamindars of this surname), Nallaparaju Zamindars, Datla, Dandu, Rudraraju, Bhupatiraju, Penmetsa andother surnames of Dhananjaya gotra Rajus are descendants of this dynasty.

I feel appalled to see people believing in whatever they want and commenting. Kindly go through authentic histories like Andhra Vijnana Sarvasvam before making caste based comments. It is very difficult to say if Velamas and the Kammas were initially one. Kammas were originally agriculturists but the Velamas were not. In fact the Velama caste does not seem to have any kula vritti except war.
ReplyDeleteThose who were mindlessly criticizing Kammas should know that after the Kakatiya Kingdom has fallen and Muslims have taken over, it was under Musunuri Prolaya nayaka that the Kakatiya commanders united. The prominent among them were the minister Bendapudi Annaya mantri who is a Brahmin, Kayastha Ambadeva and Recherla Singamanayaka.
It was under Proalayanayakas leadership that Andhra desa was liberated from the hands of the Muslims. He ruled with the title Andhra desadheeswara with his capital at Rekapalli near Bhadrachalam.
Unfortunately for Prolayanayaka aand his successor Kapanaayaka, the commanders who supported him when the Muslim threat was there started rebelling and became independent, specially Recherla Singamanayaka who later killed Kapanayaka in battle. Singaamanayaka was later killed in the seize of the Jallipalli fort by the Soma vamsa kshatriyas by treachery. The Rachakonda and Devarakonda kingdoms were founded by Anapota Nayaka and Madanayaka, the sons of Singama who later defeated the Somavamsa Kshatriyas in the Bhimavaram battle. These 2 velama kingdoms ruled the entire 13 districts of Telengana from the year 1360 AD to 1475 AD, a period of 115 years. .
