Important NOTE: Though these divisions were done in due course of time, these are no longer a hurdle for velamas growth. You may be called as polinati, padmanayaka, koppula, adi velama, but inturn you are one of those great ancestors of Andhra/Telangana rulers. So lets forget about which division we are:- we are unitedly called as velamas.
Actually I am not interested in explaining all the sub-divisions of velamas initially because in present world what people know is ONE n ONLY ONE VELAMA. The following details about divisions of velamas is given upon requests from our fellow velamaites who want to know more about their subdivisions.
The divisions were done by some of our ancestors depending upon the area of living. Some politicians like JALAGAM VENGALRAO, has brought reservations to two groups of velamas such as polinati and koppula in order to assure those educationally backward velamaites in srikakulam district. Taking this as an advantage, Many of us from Andhra who want BC reservation can turn into Koppula/Polinati Velama and those who doesn't want reservation can remain as OC. This tactic is rightly put by jalagam vengalarao, the then chief minister of Andhra pradesh. So now it is upto you to choose if you want reservation. Those people who are interested to get BC-D reservation can get a certificate at the local MRO office claiming to be a koppula/polinati velama.
Area-Wise possibility of a Certificate -
Apart from reservation criteria, Velamas are all similar in build, beauty, power and wealth in their respective areas. Various sub divisions prove strong and powerful in various places. So be proud to be a velama.
Velama sub divisions
All the divisions are based on their original living location. Major divisions in Andhra Pradesh are:
- Padmanayaka Velama
- Adi Velama
Koppula Velama
- Polinati Velama
Padmanayaka velamas are also called as Padma Velamas. They live mostly in Telangana districts like Karimnagar, Warangal, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Rangareddy, Medak, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, Hyderabad, and Coastal Andhra. They are also found in Addanki (Ongole), Vijayawada, Kakinada, Nuzvidu and the villages surrounding these places. Politically, socially and economically, they played a prominent role in the growth of Andhra Pradesh.
Adi Velamas are seen in Machilipatnam, Rajahmundry, Hyderabad, amongst other regions.
Polinati Velamas are seen in Srikakulam and other coastal Andhra districts. Most Polinati Velamas have Naidu as their middle name, and their primary occupation is farming. They play a dominant role in Srikakulam district politics and form the backbone of this district's economy.
Koppula Velamas live in Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Rajahmundry and other coastal Andhra districts. Most Koppula Velamas have Naidu as middle name i.e. suffix in their names and their primary occupation is farming. They play key roles in Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam district politics and are vital to these districts' economy.
It was rather interesting for me to read that article. Thanks for it. I like such topics and everything that is connected to this matter. I definitely want to read a bit more on that blog soon.

Rajaram 08110014757.
sir you belong to Padmanayaka velama, the warrior turned rulers after Prataparudra of Kakatiya dynasty.we(velamas) have four sub castes...Padmanayaka velama(velama dora ),Adivelama (employees of court of Rajahs), Polinati Velama & Koppukla Velama(both are farmers with significant land). We will find few samsthanas of Velam in AP(Bobbili, Pithapuram ,Nuziveedu,Venkatagiri etc) and more in Telangana(the chief minister KCR belongs to Padmanayakavelama)
DeleteI studied M Tech in Annauniversity and worked 2days for scrutiny of EAMCET applications and found many Velama community students. TN people call you as Naidu and most of the people belong to either chennai or Madhurai. Chennai got its name due to Velama king of old Chennai( Chennapatnam). Bobbili Rajah married the Chennai bride and became Chief minister of combined Madras state.so you have good history..the padmanayaka and adivelamas are having different gotras but the other two....now almost one...(polinati and koppula.....media is calling only koppula velamas of uttarandhra)are having either 1 or two gotras(Nageshwara, Nagula,Paidipala etc.)as per few articles published on velama sites we all belong to one community and due to the profession and different location/culture these many differences and people could not mix each other.we hope for the best in future and everybody will mix and excel.

DeleteMr chelikani, every where there's a velama discussion you never fail to spew venom from your stupid mouth. Just relax. No one gives a fuck if your sub sector is considered greater than other sub sectors, coz actually we other sub sectors don't give a fuck and we consider ourselves super rich and great and we don't need your individual validation .
DeleteMr chelikani There are so many sub sectors in every caste. Reddy's have up to 9 subsectors approx, kamma 4, kapus more than 10 and velamas 4. Now not all reddy sub sects people look similar nor are equally rich. Some are filthy rich and some are dirt poor. Some are tall and fair and some short and dark. Kapus have a majority population percentage in state approx 15% of state population and do you think all kapus own 100's of acres of lands, big bungalows and have crores worth of assets? And do all of them look similar? Now do you think just because there was Reddy kingdom ,kapu kingdom, all the reddys/kapus individuals ruled their respective kingdoms? All the people under reddy kingdom with a certain occupation like farming/fighting in wars were considered as reddys same with other castes. And similarly certain people under velama kingdom were all considered as one group velamas.
DeleteMr chelikani Understand the fucking difference.
DeleteJust because you asshole shout some nonsense doesn't make anyone inferior to you. We KV and PV's also have people who own 100's of acres of lands, businesses, buildings, hospitals. And I am a KV and we own more than 15 Cr worth assets and I don't think you even own a quarter of that. And some are tall and fair and short-fair and short and dark combinations. So just keep your mouth shut and mind your fucking own business and understand the differences.
Mr chelikani , remember that once you die these castes won't even matter. You might be reborn as a pig or dog or lizard no one knows. So stop having these stupid caste feelings and stop giving yourself so much of importance. I have seen your name in many velama discussion pages, youtube videos everywhere spitting venom with your filthy mouth. Just keep calm and relax. No one needs your validation.

Thank you for asserting that velamas are united irrespective of their subcastes. In this highly competitive world we will only fall if we stay divided. My extended family has all subcastes of velamas through intermarriage. We have always given highest importnace to education and professional success rather than to minor issues like subcastes. It is my conviction that we should respect indivdual merit rather than one's origin.
ReplyDeleteDo you think the formation of Telangana, where Padmanayaka velamas are concentrated, will cause a rift among the Velama subcastes? Will our caste get divided on regional basis? I hope we stay united irrespective of regional differences.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, good question? As per my opinion, no way, velama's are velamas. Every velamite have that caste feeling regardless of their sub cate. My family has mixed of Padmanayakas and koppula. my grand fathers always jokes abt their subcates, but seriously they dont have any feeling! U know one thing there are 2 sub casts in padmanayakas, raasa velama and eki velama!

Can anyone tell me can a polinati velama girl marry a koppula velama guy??
will der be any objections in dis??
I mean I wanted to know how dey r related..
please clarify me dis issue..
plzzzzzzzzz...
No they won't because they are oc and koppula velamas are BC and they won't marry. Even adhi vwlama are called as gunasakale. Even koppula velama and adhi velama don't marry each outher
DeleteSir my grandfather is Koppula and my grandmother is Pusapati velama.there is no such big difference between subcastes we are one that’s it
DeleteI knew nearly 50 families got inter sub caste marriages. Now a days money is important to marry.
Delete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteYes there is no problem in marrying people from different sects of velamas. It is quite common and many families are a mix of different sects of velamas. :)
How common is intermarriage between OC velamas (padmanayaka, adhi) and BC-D velamas (koppula, polinati)? Does anyone know of any specific examples of popular people?
ReplyDeleteI have often come across this prejudice where an OC person automatically assumes that a BC person has used reservation and hence looks down upon him. Whereas the truth is that there are a lot of BCs (in this case koppula & polinati velamas) who have not used any reservation whatsoever and in fact have excelled at academics. I find it very disparaging that a genuinely meritorious BC person should be an unwitting target of such prejudices. Has anybody been in such an awkward situation? I myself have never used any reservation but I believe it to be a form of affirmative action in order to bring about social justice and socail equality. In this regard, I found these interesting articles in Hindu:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.hinduonnet.com/2004/08/23/stories/2004082308900400.htm
http://www.hinduonnet.com/2006/05/25/stories/2006052505660900.htm
I am sorry if I may have inadvertently hurt anybody's sentiments, but it is merely a teeny weeny political opinion of mine.
What is the percentage of Velama population in Andhra Pradesh?
ReplyDeleteu can count and give me the replay
DeleteThis is with response to Ananymous posted on July 13, 2010. Prejudice is very common in our society irrepective whether you are beneficiary of reservations or not. It is great burden to carry. This is something we need to think deeper as how we can overcome. Koppula and Polinati Velamas are well off in their villages. Since most of these people belonging to Koppula and Polinati Velamas live in Uttarandhra, which is the most backward region in our state. The people in this region suffered a lot. This region continue to suffer from indifference from all governments. Uttarandhra and our communities development are interlinked. This is the time our communities has to speak. Since Srikrishna commission is touring our state. We need to bring Uttarandhra development to Srikrishna commission's notice. This is important. If Uttarandhra is developed, we will be developed and we will not need reservations in future. Our furure generations need not face bigotry from developed communities. So send ideas and suggestions to Srikrishna Commission as how Uttarandhra can be developed. Here are few suggestions I have to develop Uttarandhra:
ReplyDelete1. Separate development council needs to be formed with special budget.
2. Special package should be given to this region by Central Govt.
3. Major irrigation projects should be completed so that every acre of land can cultivated.
4. All village should be well connected and have good shools
Actually A very well known Padmanayaka leader from Warangal, active in the T movement, is in the process of getting his son married to a polinati velama girl. The delay is on account of the current T agitation. Once it subsides the news will be public.
ReplyDeleteThere are hundreds of marriages between Polinati velamas from srikakulam and Padmanayaka velamas particularly from MBNR and Khammam.
Also it must be clarified that BC-D status was given only in 1972 by Vengal Rao as a compensation for not giving ministries to velamas from coastal andhra. It was originally given for 10 years and have continued.
ReplyDeleteIn fact the real BCs of the area are very resentful that the powerful polinati/koppula velamas have been given this.
A cousin of mine (polinati velama) got married to the son of a popular political leader (padmanayaka velama) from Warangal who is also active in the T-movement.
ReplyDeleteI can tell that velama population is about 25 to 30 percent of the in uttarandhra region. It comes aroun 20 lakhs. They are second dominant community next to kapus in this region.
ReplyDeletewe belong to the velama community, and we live in chittoor, we are padmanayakas and we add naidu as middle name. but we people from chittoor(modalapalli, village and surroundings were not yet recognised(in sense not web site related to velamas mention this place and people who live there, i want to inform you that please recognise us too, there are some villages around chittoor, where our community people live, there is good literacy rate among them, we are all interested in joining the people living in other parts
ReplyDeletei dont know who actually updates the information in this site, but i want to suggest something that, intermediate board chairman Mr.Balaramiah .IAS, belongs to velama caste he is from poodi located near by srikalahasti, chittoor dist A.p
ReplyDeleteHi friends,
ReplyDeleteWhenever I go to velama webiste/forum/blog, the discussion of BC/OC topic always comes up. I belong to Koppula Velama community.
I have seen my cousin got married to Padmanayaka Velama. I have padmanayaka velamas, who treat all velamas are same. At the same
time, I see padmanayaka velamas, who think otherwise. It is an individual's opinion. There is nothing wrong in either case.
I have seen political and community leaders on both sides, working together to bring commnunities together so that we can help each other to develop into a strong community.
I feel the reason polinati and koppula communites were included in backward class category because
most of these people live in north coastal districts. These districts do not have proper irrigation and educational facilities when compared to
other coastal districts i.e. Guntur and Krishna.
I think it is waste of time for everyone of us to discuss BC/OC topic again and again. Let us leave it to induviduals to decide.
In mean while let us work hard to deveop our communities. We need to think how we can to send more number of MLAs/MPs. At one time, Koppula and polinati velamas used to have 13 MLAs. Now the number dropped to 6 seats. We lost few seats to delimitation and prajarajyam factors. We could have won 2 to 3 more seats if our commuity worked hard. We need to put all our energies together to increase our political share in next elections. We have lot of progress in the field of education, business and other fields.
Uttarandhra, which is home to Koppula and Polinati velams needs our help to develop into a prosperous region. The region needs irrigration projects so that every acre of land can cultivated and every child gets proper education. We need to lobby to
get more funds allotted to this region. In next elections, we need to seek more number of MLA and MP seats from all major
political parties. We need to see more people from our communites nominated to positions of power.
This is in response to the comment posted by Anonymous on Aug 18th. I totally agree that the OC/BC issue comes up many a time. One often becomes harsh and judgmental about KVs/PVs while the BC-D status was accorded only as late as 1972. What is worse is that they are often condescended even if they have not been beneficiaries of reservation. Take this scenario: OC girl who has used women's-quota versus BC girl who has not used any reservation; who is more meritorious?
ReplyDeleteInteresting! "OC/FC girl who used 33% women's quota versus BC girl who did not use any reservation at all"
ReplyDeleteI vote for the second one.
This is in response to above few postings, I feel that prejudice will continue to haunt us as long as Uttarandhra velamas are listed under present reservation category list.
ReplyDeleteInfact in 2008, the state government has decided to remove Uttarandhra Velamas from reservation category list. Our political leaders lobbied against it as Uttarandhra Velamas cannot compete with coastal andhra people as circar districts region are lot more developed than north costal disticts.
Coastal Andhra region historically under British rule benefited from irrigation projects on Krishna and Godavari regions. British has encouraged education by setting up educational institutions. This has developed this region a lot.
On other hand, Uttrandhra was under Zamindar rule. Zamindars were never interested in developing this region. They never developed this region educationally or economically. Even after independence, this region did not get enough budget and resource allocation for development.
So in order to compete with coastal andhra people, our political leaders argued against removing uttarandhra velamas from reservation category list.
I feel instead of listing uttarandhra velamas in present reservation category lists which is based on social status and regional backwardness, a new region for rural uttarandhra should be created. This is not a new concept. At present, seats in professional colleges and jobs
are divided between coastal andhra, rayalaseema and telangana regions. The government
needs to create a new region category i.e. Uttarandhra rural and allot certain percentage from coastal andhra to uttarandhra rural region.
By removing uttarandhra velamas from present reservation categoty list will stop bigotry and prejudice. And by creating a new region for uttarandhra region will
protect interests of uttarandhra people and help in competing with more developed coastal region.
hi good.

ReplyDeletewe need to learn a lot from kappu community who are soo united irrespective of bc oc divisions ... and of course lot of us (velamas) are also united irrespective ... i want to see the little differences should also vanish
Hi Raj,
ReplyDeleteYour intentions are good in uniting all velamas. But mentioning oc and bc velama does not help. This distinction again and again is not required.
Koppula and polinati velamas are in bc list because of regional backwardness not social backwardness.
Patnaiks are in oc list till last year. Now they are
listed in bc list. Till 1972 Uttandhra velamas are in oc category. Patnaiks like Uttarandhra velamas
are confined to Srikakulam and Vizianagram districts only.
This community in neighboring Orissa is a dominant community
and all most all chief ministers hail from this community.
Patnaiks are closely tied to Brahmin community in most respects.
Patnaiks as well as Uttandhra velamas are in bc list because
they are confined to a region which is under developed because
of lack of water resources and past famines etc. and they do not
have presence in other regions to balance. This is the same reason Brahmins, Vaishyas and Kshtriyas from Uttarandhra are not in BC list as they have presence in rest of Andhra to balance and get help.

ReplyDeleteI am from tamilnadu, belonging to kongu vellalar caste who are predominant caste in western tamilnadu known as kongu nadu.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting to read this article, and also the comment sections.
Regarding the divisions of velamas , i want to share the similarity in kongu vellalars also. We have two major sub-divisions, the natu gounder, and vellala gounder. The natu gounder are those who had power to rule over nadu, whereas vellala gounders are either farmers or village heads. The divisions occured due to administrative roles in the pre-colonial native systems. We dont have any marriage alliance with nattu gounder, but still we both are one.
I find a similarity in the velama community also. Padmanayaka Velama had occupied higher positions of the ruling power structure, and hence would have become separate caste over time. This is natural.
Inspite of all the divisions, it is the history which gives us the identity, heritage and the sense of unity.
konga chaturvarnam velama
DeleteI also have few questions. Do velamas have any connection to vellalas of tamilnadu? Is there any where i could find historical records (SSI records or any other ) of velamas?
ReplyDeleteboth are in OC and chaturvarnam.
